Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly issues ‘Bahrain Declaration’

Manama, Mar. 7 (BNA): The general meeting of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (UNCPGA), concluded here today.

Following the meeting, UNCPGA issued the “Bahrain Declaration”, which reads as follows:

“The Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly (UNCPGA) convened in Manama, Bahrain, the sixth and seventh of March 2023 under the Chairmanship of Dr. Han Seung-soo, President of the 56th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The UNCPGA welcomed the vision expressed by His Excellency Mr. Csaba Korösi, President of the current 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, in focusing its work through the prisms of crisis management and transformative action. UNCPGA members reiterated that there can be no peace without development, nor development without peace, and no peace or development without respect for human rights.

The Council called for an immediate end to hostilities in the war in Ukraine and an urgent political solution to the conflict through diplomatic means, based on the UN Charter and the three recent resolutions of the UN General Assembly on the issue. The Council further emphasized that there can be no military solution to the conflict.

The Council also affirmed its strong support for the efforts of the President of the United Nations General Assembly and of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to prevent further escalation of this serious conflict.

The Council expressed grave concern for the growing humanitarian, economic, developmental, environmental, social, and financial impacts of the war in Ukraine, not only for Ukraine and neighboring countries, but globally, particularly for developing countries.

The Council called for higher attention now to be given to a post-conflict peacebuilding agenda in the region, including reconstruction of Ukraine and an elaboration of a durable International security structure.

The Council also welcomed the efforts of the Secretary-General to promote the digitalization of the United Nations Organization. Noting that the rise of cyber threats poses a significant risk to individuals, businesses and governments, the Council underlined the need to work together to develop effective measures to prevent and respond to cyber attacks, and build a more secure and resilient digital world that promotes technological innovation while mitigating its risks and challenges.

The Council of Presidents of UN General Assembly expressed its sincere gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain for his generous hospitality and welcomed his proposal to establish a Foundation to support the work of the UNCPGA around the world. The Council further expressed it warm appreciation to Her Excellency Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, President of the 61st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, for hosting its session in Manama.”
