Qinghai: Twelve workers were killed and four others went missing on Friday after a bridge under construction collapsed in Qinghai Province, northwest China, China Central Television (CCTV) reported. The tragic incident unfolded as the steel cable of the bridge snapped, leading to a large section of the structure plummeting from a significant height into the Yellow River.
According to Bahrain News Agency, there were 15 workers and the project manager present at the site during the collapse. The bridge, an integral part of the Sichuan-Qinghai railway line, is designed to be the world's longest arch bridge featuring a double track lattice girder. Notably, it is the first construction of its kind over the Yellow River, which adds significance to the unfortunate event.
Xinhua News Agency reported that hundreds of firefighters and police officers are actively involved in the ongoing search and rescue operations. The efforts are focused on locating the missing workers and ensuring the safety of the area.
China has faced similar incidents at construction sites and industrial facilities, frequently attributed to safety standard violations. In a recent incident in December, 13 individuals went missing following a collapse at a railway construction site in Shenzhen, southern China.
