Beijing Issues Highest Rainstorm Alert, Evacuates Over 70,000 Residents

Beijing: Beijing evacuated more than 70,000 people in anticipation of heavy rainfall expected to reach up to 200 millimetres within six hours, following catastrophic floods that claimed dozens of lives last week.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Beijing placed all its 16 districts on highest alert, with warnings of sudden floods and landslides. Around 14,000 people were relocated from the mountainous Mentougou area.

Xinhua News Agency reported the deaths of three people and four missing in the Chengde resort, with five bodies recovered in Guangdong.

Authorities are working to strengthen infrastructure and improve evacuation plans following the 2012 floods that killed 79 people in Beijing.
