Bahrain wins World Summit on Information Society Prize

Bahrain, represented by the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, won the World Summit on the Information Society 2021 (WSIS) Prize, which is held under the patronage of the United Nations and the International Telecommunication Union.

The ministry participated in “Nawras” project, which is a flight permission and scheduling system and the first aviation approval online system in the Middle East; completely developed and led in-house by women staff members of the Information Systems Directorate in the ministry, and won the E-Environment class prize.

This participation came within the ministry’s strategy to implement the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, in moving towards a digital economy, and in line with the economic vision of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

The “Nawras” system was selected among 1270 global participation, qualified to the final stage in April 2021 after passing the public vote stage and selected by the expert teams concerned with the evaluation.

“We are proud of this global achievement, which adds to the Kingdom in the field of communications and information technology, proving its leading position in the field,” Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, the Transportation and Telecommunications Minister, said.

“The Nawras system won because of its relevance in supporting the implementation of the summit’s outcomes, especially in achieving the sustainable development goals.”
