Venice: The Kingdom of Bahrain inaugurated its national pavilion, titled "Heatwave," at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, located at the Arsenale in Venice, Italy. The event was attended by Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities and Commissioner of the Pavilion.
According to Bahrain News Agency, this is Bahrain's eighth participation in the Biennale, showcasing its architectural approach to tackling environmental and social challenges. Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed highlighted that Bahrain's participation aims to reinforce the Kingdom's cultural presence on the international stage. He emphasized that the Heatwave pavilion embodies Bahrain's dedication to exploring innovative and sustainable responses to climate-related challenges, drawing inspiration from the country's geography and architectural heritage.
Shaikh Khalifa further noted that the pavilion is the outcome of extensive scientific research conducted by architects and researchers, with the objective of influencing architectural practices both locally and globally. He stressed the crucial role of architecture in building resilient societies and adapting to global change, while highlighting the Biennale as a valuable platform for international exchange and forward-looking collaboration.
The pavilion was curated and designed by Andrea Faraguna, who also led the research. Contributors to the accompanying publication include Eman Ali, Abdulla Janahi, Alexander Puzrin, Caitlin Mueller, Eduardo Gasc³n Alvarez, Jonathan Brearley, Laila Al Shaikh, Latifa Al Khayat, Leslie Norford, Maitham Al Mubarak, Maryam Al Jomairi, Mohammad Salim, Paris Bezanis, Viola Zhang, and Wafa Al Ghatam. The structural design was developed by Alexander Puzrin and Mario Monotti.
The Heatwave pavilion offers an architectural proposal to address rising global temperatures. It introduces a passive outdoor cooling system inspired by traditional Bahraini techniques, aimed at enhancing environmental adaptability and promoting sustainability in areas experiencing increasing heatwaves.
The design includes a geothermal well and a solar chimney that channel ground humidity into external airflow. It is conceived as a modular structure adaptable to various urban settings. The pavilion explores passive cooling and shading strategies and their role in mitigating heat, linking climate, architecture, and social equity.
In conjunction with the pavilion, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities is releasing a publication that includes digital simulations, expert essays, and field studies, extending the impact of the research underlying the project.
