Vienna: The Kingdom of Bahrain, represented by the Bahrain Space Agency, participated in the 64th session of the Legal Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), held at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna. The session focused on significant legal issues concerning outer space, such as the implementation and challenges of the five core space treaties, the boundary between airspace and outer space, and the legal framework for space resource utilization.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the Agency was represented by Shaikha Hessa bint Ali bin Jaber Al Khalifa, the Legal Affairs Member at the Agency and Second Vice Chair of the COPUOS Bureau at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). Shaikha Hessa bint Ali expressed pride in Bahrain's involvement, emphasizing the session as an opportunity to advance international cooperation in space law and acknowledging the Kingdom's contribution to shaping global space policies.
During the session, Shaikha Hessa bint Ali noted progress made on legal standards for space resource use, contributing to a comprehensive framework that safeguards state rights and supports peaceful space activities. Participating delegations worked through three main working groups that focused on space treaties, boundary definitions, and space resources.
Bahrain's participation underscores the Agency's ongoing efforts to strengthen the Kingdom's international presence in specialized space forums and align with global legislative developments in the space sector.
