Manama: The Kingdom of Bahrain welcomed a resolution by the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee demanding an immediate end to Iranian attacks against commercial shipping and maritime infrastructure. Issued during the Committee's 84th session, the resolution condemns threats to tankers, ports, and coastal facilities, highlighting the severe risks these actions pose to both navigational safety and the delicate marine ecosystems of the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Bahrain's firm position urging Iran to adhere to UN Security Council Resolution 2817, alongside the mandates set by the IMO's legal and environmental committees on ensuring the freedom and safety of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and other vital waterways, which must be done in accordance with the rules of international law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
The Ministry further called for intensified international and regional cooperation to safeguard biodiversity and maritime security, stressing that the protection of the marine environment is not only a logistical necessity but a fundamental pillar for the stability and sustainable development of the region and the world at large.
