Bahrain and UNESCO Join Forces to Advance Sustainable Development Goals Data Monitoring.

Manama: In line with the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Bahrain's National Taskforce for Information and Population is actively working to refine the mechanisms for collecting and presenting government data. The taskforce continues to monitor national indicators that reflect Bahrain's performance on international platforms and global reports across economic and social sectors. According to Bahrain News Agency, a significant step in these efforts was the organisation of a national workshop in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The workshop aimed to enhance the methodologies for calculating and monitoring data related to the research and development expenditure indicator, a component of Sustainable Development Goal 9, which focuses on industry, innovation, and infrastructure. Representatives from various relevant government entities and the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Bahrain participated in the workshop. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to improve data monitoring and analysis, develop national statistical capacity for collecting data related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and promote knowledge sharing and the adoption of best practices to accelerate progress toward achieving the SDGs. It also seeks to bolster Bahrain's regional and international standing. The workshop addressed key topics related to calculating the research and development expenditure indicator, focusing on research and development dimensions and concepts in both the public and private sectors. Discussions also included strategies to enhance national statistical capabilities for monitoring and tracking relevant indicators. The event highlighted prominent international experiences in the field and underscored the importance of strengthening cooperation between government entities and the private sector to support efforts in monitoring research progress. It also aimed to encoura ge investment in research, development, and innovation. UNESCO representatives expressed appreciation for Bahrain's efforts and commitment to tracking progress toward achieving the SDGs. They emphasized the importance of providing accurate indicators to support decision-makers and international agencies, thereby enhancing data availability and transparency regarding the progress of these goals. The workshop represents a significant step toward fostering research innovation in Bahrain, supporting the Kingdom's efforts in research and development investment, increasing scientific capabilities, achieving sustainable growth, and positioning Bahrain as a regional hub for innovation.
