Manama: The General Directorate of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking by holding a ceremony to honour participants of the 'Weyak' programme, a key initiative within the alternative sentencing framework. The event was attended by Shaikh Khalid bin Rashid Al Khalifa, Director General of Verdict Enforcement and Alternative Sentencing, along with representatives from partner and supporting entities.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Shaikh Khalid noted that Weyak, which has graduated two cohorts with a success rate of 87%, reflects the directives of General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior, to promote recovery and safe reintegration. He highlighted the importance of psychological and social support in reducing the risk of relapse and commended the effective cooperation between the entities involved.
He also emphasised the significance of continuing such national initiatives based on humanitarian values to support a safer and more stable society. Launched in 2024, Weyak is part of the Ministry of Interior's approach to restorative justice and addressing addiction through integrated rehabilitation. The programme aims to support beneficiaries psychologically, physically, and socially, enabling their positive reintegration and helping them rebuild their lives away from addiction and harmful behaviours.
