Afforestation project launched at Diyar Al Muharraq

Manama, Bahrain’s green drive moved a step further with the launch of a new afforestation project at the Diyar Al-Muharraq.

Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak gave the go-ahead to the project, as part of the national strategy to double trees by 2035 and in line with Bahrain’s commitments to carbon neutrality by 2060.

Present were Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Undersecretary Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Assistant Undersecretary for Joint Municipal Services Shawkiya Humaidan and other officials.

The minister stressed plans to increase afforestation and motivate all parties and individuals to participate in the green drive within government projects, in cooperation with the private sector.

He stressed the importance of the afforestation project in the Diyar Al Muharraq, as one of the green initiatives spearheaded by the private sector.

“Large evergreen trees have been selected to be planted due to their suitability to Bahrain’s climatic conditions and their low water consumption”, he said praising Diyar Al Muharraq’s cooperation and interaction with the Ministry in implementing afforestation initiatives.

Diyar Al Muharraq Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Ali Al Emadi highlighted the afforestation project, using techniques and agricultural tools for digging, cultivation and irrigation networks.

The importance of afforestation related to preserving and sustaining the environment and increasing green spaces was stressed, thus contributing to promoting Bahrain’s sustainable urban development.
