Manama: Abdulrahman Kanoo Cultural Centre hosted a panel discussion on the intersection of Bahraini press and artificial intelligence. The event was part of the centre's 30th cultural season's second term and was held in conjunction with World Press Freedom Day and Bahraini Press Day.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the panel featured several experts who explored the various dimensions of AI's impact on journalism. Rashid Al Ghaib, Executive Editor and Head of Local Affairs and Digital Content at Al Bilad, discussed the current use of AI tools in newsrooms. He assessed the technical and knowledge readiness required for this shift and analyzed how AI influences the speed and quality of content production.
Zahra Habib, Acting Head of Local Affairs at Al Watan, addressed the ethical and professional challenges posed by AI in journalism. She emphasized that despite advancements in technology, human judgement remains crucial for ensuring creativity and accuracy in reporting.
Mohamed Bahr from Al Ayam focused on the new skills journalists need in the digital age. He highlighted the importance of training and discussed AI's impact on the media job market, particularly the opportunities it creates for young reporters.
Sabeeka Al Shehi, a media researcher, presented her academic findings on AI applications in Bahrain's journalism sector. She advocated for the establishment of professional guidelines to regulate the use of AI in media practices.
The panel, chaired by Sara Najeeb, concluded with an open discussion between the speakers and attendees. Participants stressed the necessity of continuous dialogue to adapt to the rapid technological changes affecting the media landscape.
