Chandpur: The Roads and Highways Department today demolished nearly three hundred illegal structures built on both sides of the Chandpur-Cumilla regional road. The eviction drive was conducted by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nigar Sultana and Executive Magistrate Nirupam Majumdar in Uaruk Bazar area of Sadar upazila from morning to afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a large number of police and army personnel were deployed to maintain law and order. UNO Nigar Sultana stated that some people have been occupying the land of the Roads and Highways Department and constructing permanent buildings and running businesses. Despite repeated requests, these structures were not removed, prompting the government to take action to restore the property. This move aims to ease traffic congestion and facilitate public movement.
The demolition drive is part of a larger plan to remove about 500 illegal structures in the Shahrasti Gate and Kaliapara areas of the upazila. This initiative underscores the commitment of the authorities to reclaim government land and ensure smooth public transit.
