Manama: Rawan bint Najeeb Tawfiqi, Minister of Youth Affairs, participated in a panel discussion organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs as part of the Hope Network initiative, held on the sidelines of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum. The session focused on the impact of successful initiatives in strengthening youth leadership and preparing future leaders.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Minister Tawfiqi emphasized Bahrain's belief that youth are the driving force behind sustainable development. She noted that the Ministry of Youth Affairs adopts a comprehensive scientific approach to identify and develop national talent, highlight their capabilities, and empower them to represent Bahrain internationally.
Minister Tawfiqi highlighted that youth empowerment programmes are designed to develop young people's potential and guide them towards leadership and excellence. These programmes aim to enable the youth to become role models and actively contribute to shaping a brighter future for the Kingdom.
During the session, Minister Tawfiqi reviewed Bahrain's experience in youth leadership development through the national project Lamea. She explained that the project uses a scientific method to guide young people through leadership-focused tracks, including assessments, challenges, and outdoor expeditions. These activities are designed to strengthen their character.
She noted that Lamea, managed by the programme's alumni, plays an active role in designing and implementing the initiative. By the end of 2024, over 70% of Lamea graduates had received job promotions or secured new employment, with some appointed as chairs of youth organisations and others joining boards of directors.
The session began with remarks from Felipe Paullier, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, who underscored the UN's support for the Hope Network and its alignment with global strategies to empower youth. He urged more countries to join the initiative as a platform that inspires hope among young people.
Marina Walter, Deputy Regional Director of the UNDP Regional Bureau for Arab States, highlighted Bahrain's commitment to youth empowerment. She said this commitment continues to inspire meaningful and practical action, emphasizing the role youth can play through inclusive and supportive policies. Walter reiterated UNDP's support for initiatives that empower youth across the region.
