WFP Warns of Famine Risk South of Khartoum Due to Funding Shortages

Khartoum: The World Food Programme (WFP) warned of escalating famine risks in several areas south of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, due to severe funding shortages that limit the programme's ability to meet increasing food needs.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Laurent Bukera, the WFP representative in Sudan, stated that the levels of hunger and desperation in these areas have reached alarming levels, signaling potential famine. He noted that the programme has managed to reach one million people in seven locations in Khartoum, highlighting the Jebel Aulia area as an example of a region suffering from extreme hunger.

The WFP is currently providing food assistance to four million people affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan since April 2023. The organisation is urging donor countries to increase support to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.
