UN notifies Israel to suspend aid to Gaza ‘unless steps are taken to protect aid workers’

Two senior United Nations officials informed Israel of suspending aid operations across the Gaza Strip ‘unless urgent steps are taken to provide better protection for humanitarian workers’ there.

The two officials said, “A letter sent by the United Nations to senior Israeli officials this month said that Israel must provide UN staff with direct communications with Israeli forces on the ground in Gaza, among other steps.”

The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing negotiations with Israeli officials. UN officials say no final decision has been made on suspending operations across Gaza and that talks with the Israelis are continuing.

The United Nations World Food Program had suspended the delivery of aid from the American floating dock off Gaza due to “security concerns.”

On June 10, the director of the World Food Program said that the program ‘temporarily suspended’ the distribution of humanitarian aid from the American floating dock off Gaza due to concerns related to ‘the safety
of our employees,’ revealing that two of her organization’s warehouses in Gaza were bombed and one employee was injured.
