Washington: President Donald Trump has stated that a civil nuclear agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia is contingent upon the kingdom's participation in the Abraham Accords. He emphasized that the deal would not allow for the enrichment of uranium.
According to TRTworld.com, the agreement reached between the US and Saudi Arabia permits the latter to enrich uranium and construct nuclear reactors using American technology. This arrangement notably excludes the stringent United Nations inspections that the US has previously demanded from Iran.
Trump clarified in a Thursday post on Truth Social that the civil nuclear deal concerns only non-military applications, similar to those in Iran and the UAE. He asserted that the agreement's approval hinges on Saudi Arabia joining the widely respected and successful Abraham Accords, which aim to normalize relations with Israel. "The United States is not opposed to Civil (Non-Enriched) Nuclear Facilities," Trump remarked.
Saudi Arabia has maintained that it will not sign the Abraham Accords without a clear framework for Palestinian statehood. The Abraham Accords, brokered by Washington during Trump's first term, sought to normalize relations between Israel and the Arab world. To date, the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco have signed the accords, while Sudan's participation is still under consideration.
