Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, announced today, Wednesday, the success of the tests to pass transit capacity from Iraq to Europe.
A statement by the Ministry of Communications said: “Under the patronage of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani and the supervision and support of Minister of Communications Hiyam Al-Yasiri, the work of the Iraq International Exhibition and Conference for Digital Transformation and Information and Communications Technology (ITEX) was launched today in the presence of a large number of officials, ambassadors, representatives of diplomatic missions, deans and professors of universities and private sector companies that is being held on the grounds of the Baghdad International Fair for the period from 27-30 September 2023.
During the opening speech, Al-Yasiri stressed the importance of the communications and informatics sector in digital transformation, as it is one of the leading sectors in Iraq.
She added, "We in the services government are working rapidly to develop communications, information technology, and post to rise to the level of developed countries, especially after the success of the ministry and its formations in implementing many important strategic projects."
The Minister pointed out "providing the infrastructure for digital transformation and linking state institutions according to their request, continuing work on completing the secured government network, and the near launch of the electronic signature project, which is considered the basic building block for digital transformation and automation."
Al-Yasiri pointed out that “the cybercrime law has been reformulated in a way that differs from the previous version, which is devoid of many penalties and restrictions, and has been presented before the Council of Ministers.”
Al-Yasiri expressed, according to the statement, “her full support for FTTH optical cable and transit projects and investing in Iraq’s important geographical location, and pointed to setting new price policies for contracts with international companies and the private sector, which will lead to a major shift in the quality of services.”
Al-Yasiri announced, “The success of the tests to pass transit capacities from Iraq to Europe via Turkey, as well as the start of contractual procedures to add a third submarine cable, in order to improve the passage of capacities and reduce Internet prices in Iraq,” indicating, “The percentage of completion of optical cable projects has reached 300%, in comparison with what is decided in the government program, and it is hoped to reach two and a half million FTTH lines by the end of this year as an alternative to the previous landline telephone, in addition to many services provided via optical fibers reaching citizens’ homes.”
