Manama: Portugal's health authorities announced that a severe heatwave that struck the country between July 27 and August 15 caused 1,331 deaths, mostly among people over 75 years old, according to the Portuguese death certificate information system.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the Directorate General of Health reported that all regions recorded higher fatalities, with the northern, central, and southern Alentejo areas being the most affected. It was noted that extreme temperatures aggravated chronic diseases, particularly heart and respiratory conditions.
The Portuguese newspaper Pºblico highlighted that the mortality rate increased by 25% during the heatwave, amid warnings of growing health risks linked to drought and heat stress on vulnerable groups.
