Manama: Amna Hamad Al Rumaihi, Chief Executive of the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), stated that Ministerial Decision (7) of 2026, which prohibits the manufacture, import, and sale of single-use plastic bags thinner than 57 microns, will help reduce plastic waste. The move supports Law (7) of 2022 on the environment and the National Waste Management Strategy.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Rumaihi highlighted that increasing the minimum thickness of plastic bags from 35 to 57 microns transforms them from single-use to reusable bags. This change will enhance waste management and make recycling more cost-effective, supporting the Kingdom of Bahrain’s efforts to strengthen the circular economy. The decision also aligns with the United Nations Environment Programme and is part of Bahrain’s gradual strategy, adopted since 2019, to mitigate plastic pollution while balancing environmental protection with business impacts.
Al Rumaihi encouraged individuals to separate plastic waste and deliver it to sorting centres for recycling. She emphasized that this practice will protect natural resources, decrease pollution, and support long-term sustainability.
