Russia lashes out at Washington over cluster bomb decision

Russia said on Saturday that Washington's recent decision to provide Ukraine with cluster bombs is an "act of desperation" and reflects failure of Ukraine's counter-offensive".

"It is an act of desperation and shows weakness against the backdrop of the failure of the much-touted Ukrainian counteroffensive," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a press release.

The ministry defied that cluster bombs would have no effect on the Russian military operation and its targets.

"The latest 'miracle weapon' which Washington and Kyiv are betting on, without thinking about the grave consequences, will have no effect on the special military operation," it added.

It warned that the US decision to send more weapons to Ukraine would further involve Washington and its allies in fighting in Ukraine, calling on the international community to be aware of this fact and move to address it.

US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken authorized on Friday an additional military aid package for Ukraine to help it resist "Russia's aggression." "Pursuant to a delegation of authority from President (Joe) Biden, I am authorizing our 42nd drawdown for Ukraine," he said in a press release.

"This assistance package includes dual-purpose improved conventional munitions (DPICMs or cluster munitions), a highly effective and reliable artillery capability to engage area targets that the United States has not previously provided to Ukraine," he added.
