The proposal to divide Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque submitted to Israel's Knesset is a "dangerous" escalation, which has "unpredictable" outcomes, Secretary General of the Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs (RCJA), Abdullah Kanaan, said. In statements to "Petra," on Thursday, Kannan noted the proposal, which was submitted by Knesset member of Likud Party, Amit Halevi, and circulated in the media outlets, aimed to allocate Al-Qibli Mosque and Jerusalem's southern yards to Muslims, and plans to Judaize northern site, including Dome of the Rock. Blasting the move as "provocative," he noted it reflects efforts to impose Israel's sovereignty and end the historically, legally and popularly supported Jordanian role. Kannan noted historical and legal facts, including resolution of United Nations and its affiliated organizations, affirm that Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Sharif, with its total area of 144 dunums, is purely an Islamic property. Kanaan added that Jordan-run Jerusalem Endowments Department is the only body responsible for managing Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is a legal reflection in Jerusalem's existing historical status quo. On future action, he called on the international community to preserve Jerusalem's status quo to achieve the region's peace and security and push Israel to comply with the two-state solution, including establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. RCJA, based on Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites, affirms Jordan's "firm" position in defending Jerusalem and Palestine, he noted. Kanaan noted the Kingdom's role also aims to protect Jerusalem's sanctities from Judaizing and extremism schemes led by hardline Israeli parties and groups, which failed over previous decades, thanks to Jerusalemites' steadfastness.
