Prince Mired urges media to include rights of persons with disabilities in policies

His Royal Highness Prince Mired bin Raad, Chairman of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), met Tuesday with Director General of Al-Mamlaka Dana Sayagh to discuss the media’s role in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in Jordan.

The meeting comes as part of a series of meetings conducted by Prince Mired with media institutions with the aim of activating the role that they can play in covering disability issues by providing objective media materials that use a human rights-based approach far from stereotypes that limit persons with disabilities within the dichotomy of superhuman heroism or unfortunate submissiveness and weakness.

Prince Mired stressed the need to shed more light on the rights of persons with disabilities and place them on the top of the priorities of the agendas of media organizations, pointing to the importance of covering their problems and challenges in an objective and practical manner moving away from sensationalism.

He lauded the Al-Mamlaka’s efforts in its ongoing coverage of disability issues, which culminated in the channel winning the silver and gold awards for the visual media axis within the media competition “They Dealt with My Issue Objectively” in its second session for the year 2022.

For her part, Sayagh underscored the channel’s commitment to cooperating with the HCD in dealing with issues of persons with disabilities objectively and encouraging its media professionals to write in-depth media reports on disability issues, in addition to adding a list of correct terms on the rights of persons with disabilities to the channel’s editorial policy.
