Palestinians call for reopening of key Gaza crossing

The Palestinians on Tuesday called for the reopening of a pivotal commercial crossing in the Gaza Strip after it was closed indefinitely by Israeli forces, urging international bodies to take appropriate action on the matter.

The closure of the crossing is a “dangerous escalation” in the Israeli economic blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip, the enclave’s commerce chamber chief Aaed Aburamadan said in a statement.

The status quo risks exacerbating the hardships of industrial and agricultural bodies operating across the Gaza Strip, he underlined, saying the situation could degenerate into a “humanitarian catastrophe” if the closure persists.

Israeli forces on Monday closed the commercial border crossing with Gaza known as Karm Abu Salem, which is the only route used for the imports of goods and aid.
