NIHR President commends MOI efforts in human rights protection

Ali Ahmed Al Derazi, President of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), affirmed that all national mechanisms for protecting human rights, including the NIHR, the Ombudsman,the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission (PDRC) and the Special Investigation Unit (SIU); are aligned with the objectives of His Majesty’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s comprehensive development process on upholding human rights.

He noted that cooperation between human rights entities and relevant authorities within the government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to address all human rights issues has positively contributed to advancing the status human rights in the kingdom.

He noted that this has also strengthened the role of the NIHR over the recent years and gave it more independence to perform its role.

NIHR president commended the Ministry of Interior for its efforts to support the institution.

He said that the international accreditation by the American Correctional Association (ACA) received by the General Directorate of Correction and Rehabilitation, demonstrated the commitment to continued development and applying international standards to its corrective policies and ensuring the rights of inmates.
