NIHR Condemns Iranian Attacks on Bahrain on Arab Human Rights Day

Manama: Arab Human Rights Day is observed annually on March 16, marking the anniversary of the 2008 entry into force of the Arab Charter on Human Rights. Following its adoption at the 2004 Tunis Summit, the Charter serves to reaffirm the commitment of Arab nations to strengthening human rights, protecting fundamental freedoms, and safeguarding human dignity.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) affirms the importance of adhering to the provisions of the Arab Charter on Human Rights and promoting a culture of respect for rights and freedoms, in line with the principles contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and relevant international conventions. It also emphasises that respect for the rules of international humanitarian law and international human rights law represents a fundamental commitment aimed at protecting civilians and civilian objects and safeguarding human dignity.

The NIHR condemns the attacks carried out by Iran on the Kingdom of Bahrain. These acts represent a violation of international humanitarian law and a threat to regional security and stability. The Institution emphasises that targeting civilians or endangering their lives constitutes a clear breach of international legal standards.

The NIHR calls upon the international community, human rights organisations, and Arab states, particularly members of the League of Arab States, to fulfil their responsibilities by condemning these attacks. It underscores the necessity of respecting state sovereignty and adhering to international law. Such commitment is essential to protecting civilians and enhancing security and stability in the region.
