With 90 percent of the votes counted, incumbent Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould El Ghazouani set for a sweeping election victory, the electoral commission announced Sunday.

According to the figures posted on the electoral commission’s website, El Ghazounani secured 55,82 of the votes, to lead Saturday’s presidential elections with a large margin from human rights campaigner Biram Dah Abeid who came second with only 22.32 of the votes.

Leader of the Islamist Tewassoul Party Hamadi Ould Sid’ El Moctar came third with 13 percent of the votes.

Meanwhile, Presidential hopeful Abeid said he would only recognize his campaign’s counting.

“We will only recognize our own results, and therefore we will take to the streets” to protest the electoral commission count, he said.
