Venice: The Kingdom of Bahrain is set to unveil its National Pavilion, titled "Heatwave," at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia on May 9. This marks Bahrain's eighth appearance at the prestigious event, which this year revolves around the theme "Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective," focusing on how architecture can address global issues.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the Kingdom's participation is spearheaded by Shaikh Khalifa Bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA). The pavilion is curated by architect Andrea Faraguna, who also spearheaded its design and research. The accompanying publication includes insights from contributors such as Eman Ali, Abdulla Janahi, Alexander Puzrin, and others. The structural design was developed by Alexander Puzrin and Mario Monotti.
Situated in the historic Artiglierie section of the Arsenale, the pavilion introduces an architectural solution to combat the increasing challenge of global warming. It draws on traditional Bahraini cooling techniques to propose a passive outdoor cooling installation that supports environmental resilience and social sustainability, particularly in regions severely affected by extreme heat.
The pavilion's design incorporates a geothermal well and a solar chimney, linking subterranean conditions with the outdoor environment. This modular unit is designed for flexible implementation across various urban landscapes. It highlights the potential of passive cooling and shading structures to alleviate the impact of extreme heat in Bahrain, serving as a convergence point for climate, architecture, and social equity.
In addition to the pavilion, BACA will publish a document featuring numerical analysis, expert essays, and field surveys, enhancing the pavilion's influence beyond its physical manifestation.
