Jordan’s envoy to UN: Amman stands with all capabilities with UNRWA

New York: Mahmoud Al-Hamoud, Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, reaffirmed on Friday that Amman is committed to supporting UNRWA politically and financially and will do everything within its power to support the organization.

Addressing the New York pledging conference at the UN headquarters, Al-Hamoud emphasized the impartiality and expertise of UNRWA, refuted the vicious accusations made against it, and emphasized the necessity of boosting financial support for the organization.

Al-Hamoud noted that Jordan hosted “The Call for Action: Urgent Humanitarian Response for Gaza” conference which took place in the Dead Sea region last month in collaboration with the Arab Republic of Egypt and the United Nations. Attending the conference were representatives from 75 countries, and the conference’s resolutions called for the provision of long-term, sustainable funding to support the agency’s operations in Gaza as well as its other areas of responsibility.

He mentioned that Jordan, along with Slovenia, K
uwait, and a number of UN member states, launched the document of joint commitments for UNRWA, and that Jordan is collaborating with Sweden, UNRWA, and a group of friendly nations to arrange a ministerial meeting during the high-level week of the General Assembly during next September.

The goal of the meeting is to provide the necessary support to the agency. With more than 118 participating nations, it was clear how crucial it was to garner political support for the agency in light of its crucial role in the area, mandate preservation, and capacity-building.

In addition, he emphasized the importance of UNRWA’s position as a humanitarian agency that is indispensable and that no other organization can fill. This includes not just supplying and distributing humanitarian goods but also offering health care, education, and other necessities.

In support of millions of Palestinians, their future, and their established rights the most significant of which is their right to return and compensation he emphasized th
e significance of international support for the agency’s budget, which is based on a two-state solution in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
