Japan to provide USD five mln aid for Ukraine flooding

The Japanese government decided on Tuesday to extend USD five million in emergency grant aid in response to the flood disaster triggered by the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine, the Foreign Ministry announced.

Japan will implement emergency humanitarian assistance in such areas as foods, water and sanitation, and health through international organizations, including the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the ministry said in a press release.

The response to the incident was strongly requested by the Ukrainian government, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in light of its urgency, according to the ministry.

“This emergency grant aid embodies the emergency humanitarian assistance announced by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to the President Zelenskyy, at the Japan-Ukraine summit meeting on June 9, and carries significant importance as part of Japan’s assistance to Ukraine,” it said.

Japan will continue to demonstrate its leadership as Group of Seven (G-7) presidency and to provide support for and stand by the people of Ukraine, in response to the needs in Ukraine,” it added.
