Japan, Saudi DMs confirm defense cooperation

Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada and Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman confirmed on Monday that defense cooperation and exchanges between the two countries are being promoted, Japan’s Defense Ministry said.

During their meeting in Tokyo, Hamada and Prince Khalid exchanged views on bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges, including in the field of defense equipment and technology, the ministry said in a statement.

The two ministers also agreed to further enhance communication between defense authorities using consultations between defense authorities and other means, as well as to further strengthen bilateral defense cooperation and exchanges, it said.

Touching on the National Defense Strategy, which was newly formulated in December last year, Hamada explained that Japan will pursue the strengthening of its own defense capabilities as well as the strengthening of cooperation with other countries, including Saudi Arabia.

Prince Khalid explained the situation in the Middle East and Saudi Arabia’s defense policy, and mentioned the reform program of his ministry and its main initiatives, according to the statement. The two also confirmed that they would never tolerate any attempt to change the status quo by force, it added.
