Japan PM vows continued support for Ukraine

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Tuesday vowed Japan’s continued support for Ukraine, expressing his unshakable determination to stand with the war-torn country.

During his 20-minute telephone talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Kishida reiterated his strong condemnation of Russia’s continued attacks on various parts of Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, according to a statement issued by the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

Kishida told Zelenskyy that Japan will continue to make its utmost effort to support Ukraine and explained the progress of Japan’s assistance, including the one through the NATO Trust Fund, the ministry said. Zelenskyy renewed his gratitude for Japan’s support to Ukraine, and briefed Kishida on efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in his country.

Kishida also shared his view with Zelenskyy that Tokyo will continue to reach out to the Global South, including countries of the Indo-Pacific region, while demonstrating leadership as Group of Seven (G-7) Chair. In addition, the two leaders reaffirmed views that they will continue to work closely together, the statement said.
