Tokyo: Japan and African nations have reached an agreement to enhance cooperation aimed at ensuring the stable supply and responsible development of critical minerals. This initiative is part of broader global efforts to bolster economic security. The agreement was articulated in a joint statement released at the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9).
According to Bahrain News Agency, the joint statement highlighted the significance of sound debt management and adherence to the rule of law. It called for equitable partnerships that not only support local processing but also add value to Africa's abundant mineral resources. Africa, a continent experiencing rapid economic growth, is home to a wealth of natural resources, including rare earth elements essential for various industries.
The conference saw participation from leaders and representatives of approximately 50 African countries, in addition to the Japanese government, the United Nations, the UN Development Programme, the World Bank, and the African Union Commission. The discussions during the event concentrated on topics such as peace and stability, economic issues, and social development.
This agreement comes at a time of escalating global competition for access to critical minerals. Japan is keen on deepening its strategic partnerships in Africa, where the next TICAD meeting is scheduled to take place.
