Iraq says ‘committed’ to Vienna Convention on protecting diplomatic missions

Baghdad announced Saturday that it is “fully committed” to the Vienna Convention to regulate diplomatic relations between countries and protect diplomatic missions. The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it is “fully committed” to the Vienna Convention and that the Iraqi authorities would be responsible for protecting and ensuring the safety of diplomats and diplomatic missions in Baghdad. The statement condemned the attack on the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, noting that attacking an embassy “is an act that would not be allowed.” The Iraqi security authorities had prevented protesters who tried to storm the Danish embassy in Baghdad to protest against extremists burning the Quran and the Iraqi flag.
