GCC Secretary General Backs UNRWA Mandate Renewal by UN General Assembly

Manama: Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), welcomed the resolution adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly to renew the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for three additional years, until 2029.

According to Bahrain News Agency, he clarified that the role undertaken by UNRWA has become more important today than ever before, given the escalating challenges the Palestinian people are experiencing. He said these challenges require strengthened international efforts to provide for their basic needs, including education, health, and urgent relief aid.

The Secretary General reiterated the GCC states' support for the Agency's programmes and projects, noting that this support stems from the GCC member states' unwavering positions regarding the Palestinian cause and their firm commitment to supporting the Palestinian people, preserving their legitimate rights, and ensuring the sustainability of UNRWA's work while enabling it to perform its duties efficiently and effectively.
