Accra:Gulf Cooperation Council The Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-STAT) has reported that there are approximately 12.8 million adolescents and young people aged between 10 and 24 within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This demographic represents 20% of the projected total population in the GCC for the year 2025, highlighting its importance as a significant human resource for the region's future development.
According to Bahrain News Agency, GCC countries have achieved 100% coverage of basic health services for adolescents and young people, a figure that far exceeds the global average of 68%. This accomplishment is indicative of the comprehensive health services available to this age group within the region.
Furthermore, the GCC nations have implemented 100% of basic national regulations aimed at supporting adolescent and youth health, compared to 84% globally. These regulations ensure a supportive framework that enhances access to healthcare and health services for young people.
The region observes Gulf Adolescent and Youth Health Day on September 30 each year. This day serves to underscore the importance of investing in the health of younger generations, promoting prevention and health awareness, and tailoring services to meet their needs. It also highlights the necessity of national policies and regulations that cater to the health needs of youth, thereby contributing to a healthier and more sustainable Gulf society.
