Abu dhabi: Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, joined an extraordinary session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level to address Iranian attacks on GCC states. The meeting, held via video conference, was organized at the request of Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Egypt.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the session was chaired by Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, in its role as the current chair of the Council. Attendees included Arab state Foreign Ministers and Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States.
Dr Al Zayani emphasized the gravity of the Iranian attacks, which involved thousands of ballistic missiles and drones targeting GCC states and Jordan. These attacks resulted in extensive damage to infrastructure and residential areas, causing fear among citizens and residents. The Foreign Minister labeled these acts as blatant aggression, violating international humanitarian law and the sovereignty of Arab states.
He noted the destructive impact on civilian facilities, including airports, ports, and energy installations. Despite the severity of the attacks, the Minister praised the efficiency of the armed forces and air defense systems in the targeted countries for their role in protecting lives and property.
In response to the aggression, Dr Al Zayani highlighted the importance of Arab solidarity and unity in safeguarding national security. He reiterated that any threat to one Arab state is a threat to all, in line with the Charter of the League of Arab States and the Joint Defence and Economic Cooperation Treaty of 1950.
The Minister presented a resolution prepared by Bahrain, condemning the Iranian attacks and calling for an end to such provocations. The resolution also addressed the need for unity in supporting Lebanon and the Palestinian cause. Bahrain, as a member of the United Nations Security Council, is coordinating efforts to submit a draft resolution condemning the Iranian attacks and calling for their cessation.
The Ministerial Council issued a resolution condemning the Iranian aggression against Arab states, describing it as a violation of sovereignty and international law. The resolution supported the rights of Arab states to defend themselves and called on the United Nations Security Council to take action against Iran’s provocative measures.
The Council also urged Iran to comply with international obligations, respect civilian protection, and maintain freedom of navigation in international waters. Additionally, the Council condemned Iranian actions threatening navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, highlighting the risks to regional stability and global economic interests.
Bahrain’s delegation included Fawzia bint Abdullah Zainal, Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the League of Arab States, along with other key officials.
