FM briefs US counterpart on outcomes of Amman meeting on Syria

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, on Thursday called US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, and briefed him on outcomes of the Amman Consultative Meeting on Syria. Safadi informed Blinken on the track launched by the meeting towards resolving the Syrian crisis and addressing all its humanitarian, security and political consequences, according to the step-by-step methodology, and in line with UN Resolution 2254. Safadi stressed the importance of this track in breaking the stalemate in efforts to reach a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis and progress towards a political solution to the crisis that preserves Syria's unity, cohesion and sovereignty, restores its security and stability, rids it of terrorism, leads to the exit of foreign forces from it, meets the aspirations of the Syrian people and provides conditions for the voluntary return of refugees. Safadi said that the Amman joint statement issued by the meeting focused primarily on humanitarian issues that contribute to alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people, such as the delivery of humanitarian aid to beneficiaries, including through cross-border aid in accordance with the UN-approved mechanisms and an experimental process for the United Nations to organize the return of about a thousand Syrian refugees. He added out that the Amman statement identified mechanisms to confront drug smuggling, and set a roadmap to gradually address security and political issues and reach a political solution to the crisis. Safadi said that the Kingdom places top priority to combating drug smuggling across the Syrian border into its territory, stressing the importance of implementing Amman's understandings on launching an effective mechanism that stops this escalating danger. The foreign minister noted that the Amman meeting underlined the importance of taking effective and practical steps that reflect positively on the Syrian people, alleviate their suffering, and address all the consequences of the crisis, leading to a comprehensive solution to the crisis. Safadi and Blinken discussed future prospects for efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis, according to the approved references. Safadi emphasized the importance of the US central role in efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and the continuation of coordination with the United States in efforts to end it, and to stop the suffering it has caused and continues to cause for the Syrian people, and threats to regional and international security. Safadi and Blinken agreed to continue coordination and consultation as part of the historic strategic partnership and friendship between Jordan and the United States.
