Manama: The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has spotlighted two exceptional agricultural success stories from Bahrain in its regional publication, "Voices of cooperatives: A collective journey through the agrifood systems in the Near East and North Africa region," featuring farmers Mirza Hassan Mansour and Mohamed Mohsen.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the publication, released to commemorate FAO's 80th anniversary, includes over 70 stories from 14 countries across the region, showcasing inspiring agricultural experiences. The two Bahraini stories have also been published on FAO's website, highlighting the innovative and sustainable practices of Bahraini farmers.
Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, stated that FAO's selection signifies the ongoing achievements of Bahrain's national agricultural sector, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and with the backing of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. The Minister praised Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa for her pivotal role in supporting the agricultural sector through the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD).
Minister Al Mubarak emphasized the importance of NIAD's partnership in promoting successful national agricultural initiatives. He noted that the selection of these stories brings international recognition to Bahraini farmers who adeptly blend traditional agricultural methods with modern technology.
Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary General of NIAD, remarked that the inclusion of the stories in the UN publication serves as international documentation of Bahrain's agricultural progress. She acknowledged the continuous support of HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa in fostering a conducive environment for agricultural innovation.
Asem Abdullatif Abdullah, Undersecretary of Agriculture Affairs and Animal Wealth, pointed out that these stories exemplify Bahraini farmers' leadership in innovation and sustainability. The Agriculture Affairs and Animal Wealth Sector facilitated Bahrain's contribution through comprehensive documentation and collaboration with FAO.
The first story highlights Mirza Hassan Mansour's endeavors in Bilad Al Qadeem, where he transformed saline-affected agricultural land using modern irrigation and organic fertilizers. His family also played a vital role in developing smart irrigation systems and digital marketing, alongside their community contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The second story focuses on Mohamed Mohsen from Buri and the Bahraini Farmers Association, who pioneered a collective model for purchasing seeds and fertilizers to reduce costs. Their efforts in sharing technical expertise and supplying fresh produce have bolstered Bahrain's food system resilience and food security.
