Manama: Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), inspected the Jasra 400kV electricity transmission station project, a key strategic initiative currently underway in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This project is the largest transmission station of its kind at this stage of development.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the EWA President stated that the project is part of the national master plan aiming to develop and expand electricity transmission networks. It represents a significant advancement in strengthening Bahrain's energy infrastructure. Once operational, the station is expected to alleviate the load on the Riffa subnetwork by up to 25%, enhancing the reliability and stability of the national grid.
He further mentioned that the Jasra station will facilitate the full utilisation of energy produced by the second phase of Al Dur Power Plant. This will improve load distribution efficiency and support Bahrain's broader economic and urban development goals.
During the visit, the EWA President reviewed the project's implementation stages and emphasized its role in improving the Kingdom's electricity interconnection with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The project will upgrade the current interconnection from 220kV to 400kV, enhancing grid reliability and enabling more efficient electricity trade, while preparing the grid to meet future demands.
The development of the Jasra 400kV transmission station is in partnership with prominent global energy companies, including Siemens (Germany), Hitachi (Japan), Iljin and Taihan (South Korea), and TBEA (China).
The project encompasses the construction of a new 400kV transmission station on a 16,000-square-metre site, adding 2,000 MVA in transformation capacity, a 45% increase. It also involves the installation of 130 kilometres of 400kV underground cables, marking a 92% expansion, and the establishment of a 220kV sub-transmission system with an additional 90 kilometres of cables, reflecting a 14% increase.
Scheduled to be operational in 2026, the new station will significantly enhance Bahrain's electricity transmission network, supporting the Authority's efforts to deliver high-quality services to citizens and residents.
