Manama: The Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT), the first accredited training centre by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) in the Middle East, has announced the launch of the Sixth Edition of its Gemmology Foundation Programme. This programme is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of gemstones, pearls, and natural diamonds, enabling them to enhance their expertise in jewellery craftsmanship or lay the foundation for a successful career in the field.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the programme follows a curriculum approved by Gem-A and includes foundational courses and a diploma certified by Gem-A. This initiative serves as a vital step for those aspiring to pursue the Gemmology Diploma and offers participants the opportunity to attain membership in Gem-A. Graduates can use prestigious professional designations, such as FGA (Fellow of the Gemmological Association), to complete their gemmology studies.
Participants in the programme will gain knowledge and skills to launch jewellery businesses, unlocking entrepreneurial opportunities in various fields, including jewellery design, gemstone evaluation, lab technician roles, and gemstone procurement. The programme offers internationally recognized certifications from Gem-A, a globally renowned authority in gemmological and jewellery education with over 110 years of expertise. Accredited by Ofqual in England, these certifications ensure the highest standards of integrity and credibility.
Key topics covered include the properties of gemstones, proper care and commercial applications, value and pricing factors, and professional handling of rough, polished, and mounted gemstones. Participants will also learn about organic and synthetic gem materials, imitation stones, and the accurate use of gemmological tools for conducting tests and observations. The course also covers the gemstone lifecycle, from mining to retail, and provides skills needed to distinguish between natural, treated, and synthetic gemstones.
