Consultative meeting on Sudan stresses necessity of preserving state institutions


Participants in the Cairo-hosted consultative meeting on Sunday emphasized Wednesday the necessity of preserving state institutions as the backbone for preserving the unity, stability and territorial integrity of Sudan.

In a statement, the participants noted that the meeting shows the importance of intensifying coordination among regional and international organizations, along with the sponsors of the main initiatives to help achieve a comprehensive ceasefire, restore peace and stability in Sudan. They conferee affirmed the strong commitment to protecting Sudan’s sovereignty.

They expressed deep concern about the spread of violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, ethnic violence that may reach the level of ethnic cleansing crimes in some areas of Darfur, and the increasing possibility of the conflict spreading across borders, which poses serious threats to peace and stability in the region.

They welcomed the Egyptian efforts to hold a conference of Sudanese civilian political forces a
t the end of this month to launch a Sudanese national dialogue.

The participants also expressed their appreciation for the initiative of the Arab League, led by Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, and outcome of this meeting.

They stressed the importance of holding regular consultative meetings to exchange views on the results of their joint efforts and ensuring the harmony of their initiatives for Sudan. They agreed on holding the second consultative meeting next July. The meeting, organized by the Arab League, brought together representatives of the African Union, the European Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the United Nations, Bahrain (presidency of the last Arab Summit), Djibouti (presidency of IGAD), Mauritania (presidency of the African Union), Egypt (sponsor of the Sudan Neighboring Countries Initiative) and Saudi Arabia and the United States of America (sponsors of the Jeddah talks).
