Conference in Cairo appeals to warring Sudanese to silence the guns

Participants in the “consultative meeting on Sudan” on Wednesday appealed to the warring parties in Sudan to silence the guns during Eid Al-Adha.

The League Secretary General Ahmad Abulgheit said in a news conference that the conferees sensed dangers emanating from the irregular situation in Sudan and looming signals that the war-haggard nation might eventually disintegrate.

All participants in the meeting agreed on the necessity to enforce a ceasefire as soon as possible, he said, adding that they urged the warring foes to muzzle the guns during the Eid holiday (starting on June 16).

The conference grouped representatives of the Arab League, the African Union, the UN, the EU, Mauritania (the chair of IGAD), Bahrain (the chair of the Arab Summit) and the US.

He revealed that they agreed on forming a special team to tackle the issue of restoring peace to Sudan, adding that it would hold the first meeting in Djibouti in a month.
