China Begins Construction of Two New Nuclear Power Units in Fangchenggang

Manama: China has begun construction of two new nuclear power units using domestically developed Hualong One third-generation technology in the coastal city of Fangchenggang, located in southern China.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Guangxi Nuclear Power Company said that Units 5 and 6 of the Guangxi Nuclear Power Station will each have a capacity of over 1.2 million kilowatts and are expected to generate 20 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually once operational.

The project, located in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, plans to include six nuclear power units in total. The first two units began operating in 2016, while Units 3 and 4, also based on Hualong One technology, entered service in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

By the end of March 2025, the station's four operating units had produced over 160 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to saving more than 48 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by around 131 million tonnes.
