China and India Engage in Talks to Enhance Bilateral Relations

Beijing: Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, held a meeting with Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the two sides had positive, constructive, and forward-looking discussions on bilateral, regional, and international issues of common interest. They agreed to view the border situation within the overall framework of bilateral relations and work towards a balanced and mutually acceptable approach to the boundary issue, following the political guiding principles agreed between the two countries in 2005.

The discussions led to the establishment of an experts' group on boundary demarcation and a working group under a mechanism to strengthen effective management and control of the boundary. This aims to safeguard peace and stability in the border areas. Additionally, a mechanism for general talks in the eastern and middle sectors was agreed upon, with plans to hold a new round of general talks in the western sector at the earliest opportunity. Both countries will utilize boundary management and control mechanisms through diplomatic and military channels.

The two sides also exchanged views on cooperation concerning transboundary rivers and agreed to use the experts' mechanism on transboundary rivers to maintain communication on renewing the memorandum of understanding on flood reporting. Furthermore, the Chinese side agreed, on humanitarian grounds, to share emergency hydrological information on relevant rivers with the Indian side.

An agreement was reached to reopen three traditional border trade markets and to hold the 25th round of talks in China in 2026.
