Tripoli: The UN Special Representative of the Scretary-General for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, met yesterday at the mission’s headquarters in Tripoli with a group of activists and community leaders from the south of the country.

‘They shared their views on the political process, and they deplored the marginalization and lack of representation of their region and called for its inclusion at political, economic, and security levels,’ Bathily said in a tweet.

Bathily added that the attendees affirmed their support for all efforts to end current political division, stressing the need to form a unified government that will lead the country towards the elections and pave the way for sustainable peace and stability.

‘I ??underscored that the South must be key to every initiative seeking to preserve Libya’s unity and territorial integrity. I urge authorities-East and West-to address the grievances of the region in terms of political participation, development, and equitable wealth sharing,’ Bathily said.

The UNSMIL
said on its website that during the meeting it was agreed to establish an inclusive contact group between UNSMIL and the Southern constituencies to follow up on issues of concern, first and foremost taking into account their views on the ongoing political process and national reconciliation.
