Dhaka: Bangladesh aims to export 4,000 metric tonnes of mangoes in the next three months, with 600 tonnes already dispatched to 25 countries, officials announced today. "We are expecting to export 4,000 metric tonnes of mangoes within the next three months. By now, we have exported 600 tonnes to 25 countries," said Mohammad Arifur Rahman, the project director for the Agriculture Extension Department's exportable mango production, to BSS. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the United Kingdom, particularly England, is expected to be the largest recipient of Bangladeshi mangoes. In the past 16 days, 600 tonnes have already been exported to various destinations. The export price per kilogram ranges from US$5 to US$5.5, but freight charges account for a significant portion, ranging between US$3 and US$4. Officials highlighted that last year, Bangladesh exported 1,320.398 tonnes of mangoes to 21 countries, with the highest volumes going to the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, and other n ations. Statistics show that approximately 3,100 tonnes were exported in 2022-23 and 1,321 tonnes in 2023-2024. Mango producers estimate this year's yield at 27 lakh metric tonnes, with officials reporting 27 lakh tonnes produced in 2022-23 and 24.5 lakh metric tonnes in 2023-24. The exported mango varieties include Gopalbhog, Himsagor, and Lengra, Rahman stated. For export, several formalities and specific procedures are required, including registration with the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), obtaining an Export Registration Certificate (ERC), and a Certificate of Registration as an Exporter of Horticultural Products, particularly for exports to the EU. Quality control and adherence to international standards such as GLOBALG.A.P. are crucial for accessing premium markets. The project director noted that officials at the central packing house inspect mangoes and issue phytosanitary certificates for agro product exports. Currently, 150 organizations involved in mango export are registered with the commerce ministry. Agriculture Secretary Dr. Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian previously stated that the delicious taste of Bangladeshi mangoes has created demand abroad.
