Bahrain’s Historic Milestone: Presidency of UN Security Council in April 2026

Manama: Bahrain's presidency of the United Nations Security Council in April 2026 marks a historic milestone in advancing international peace and security, as affirmed by Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs. This achievement underscores Bahrain's pioneering contributions to international diplomacy under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Dr. Al Zayani expressed pride in Bahrain assuming this high-level international responsibility, which coincides with its chairmanship of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and its presidency of the Ministerial Council of the League of Arab States at its 165th session. This highlights the international community's confidence in Bahrain's foreign policy and its commitment to coordinating Gulf and Arab positions, enhancing international solidarity for the greater good.

The minister elaborated on Bahrain's active diplomatic role, which offers a strategic opportunity to uphold regional and international charters by maintaining principles of national sovereignty, state unity, and territorial integrity while avoiding interference in internal affairs. He emphasized pursuing peaceful, sustainable conflict resolutions, ensuring maritime navigation safety, safeguarding energy supplies, and combating terrorism to bolster regional and international security.

Dr. Al Zayani pointed out Bahrain's diplomatic success in galvanizing international support against Iranian attacks on GCC member states and Jordan, leading to United Nations Security Council Resolution (2817) co-sponsored by 136 countries. This resolution, along with a unanimous Human Rights Council resolution supported by 115 countries, demanded Iran cease its attacks, citing violations of sovereignty and threats to peace and security.

He reaffirmed Bahrain's commitment, through its Security Council presidency, to fostering dialogue, understanding, and international partnerships to reinforce security and stability. Dr. Al Zayani also emphasized efforts to strengthen the interconnection between peace, security, sustainable development, and human rights, aiming for a secure, stable, and prosperous world.
