Bahrain Seeks Support for Maritime Security Proposal at IPU Assembly

Arusha:Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council and Head of the Bahrain Parliamentary Division delegation, met with Roger Edward, President of the Parliamentary Group of Latin America and the Caribbean, during the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tanzania.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the meeting focused on strengthening cooperation between the Bahrain Parliamentary Division and the Parliamentary Group of Latin America and the Caribbean. They aimed to enhance coordination at international parliamentary forums to support shared interests and unified positions on issues of mutual concern.

The discussions also included Bahrain's proposed draft urgent item for submission to the IPU Assembly. The proposal, titled "Ensuring Freedom of Navigation, Maritime Security and the Flow of International Trade through Maritime Routes and Straits in Accordance with International Law," emphasizes the strategic importance of maritime security to global safety and the economy.

Fakhro highlighted that Bahrain's proposal underscores its commitment to ensuring the freedom and safety of navigation through international maritime routes and straits, which are crucial for global trade stability and energy security. He pointed out that Bahrain's strategic location makes it essential to have international parliamentary efforts focused on establishing legal and cooperative frameworks to protect these critical waterways.

Roger Edward praised Bahrain's active involvement in international parliamentary forums and its proactive initiatives supporting global peace and security. He assured the group's backing for Bahrain's proposal on maritime navigation and straits security, emphasizing its importance as an urgent item on the Assembly's agenda.

The meeting also included Deputy Head of the Bahrain Parliamentary Division delegation Hala Ramzi Fayez, and MPs Hassan Ibrahim Hassan, Zainab Abdulameer Khalil, and Ali Saqr Al Doseri. The Parliamentary Group of Latin America and the Caribbean comprises over 30 countries and promotes cooperation among its members within the IPU.
