Manama: The Kingdom of Bahrain has successfully secured a seat on the Arab Charter on Human Rights Committee (AHRC), represented by Nawar Abdulla Al Mutawa, who serves as the Human Rights Affairs Advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Bahrain's delegation to the AHRC meeting was led by Ambassador Dr. Yousef Abdulkarim Bucheeri, the Director-General of Legal Affairs and Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation included members of Bahrain's mission to the Arab League. The election aimed to select four new independent Arab experts from the seven committee members representing the state's parties to the Charter, with Bahrain's candidate receiving the highest number of votes.
Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Bahrain's Minister of Foreign Affairs, acknowledged the Kingdom's significant role in human rights, which aligns with the reformist approach of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The government's efforts, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, were also commended for this achievement. Dr. Al Zayani highlighted that this accomplishment reflects the confidence of Arab League member states in Bahrain's initiatives to promote human rights. These efforts are in harmony with the Kingdom's National Human Rights Plan, which details human rights priorities and projects from 2022 to 2026 with clearly defined objectives and measurable indicators. Bahrain continues to promote human rights both regionally and internationally.
Nawar Abdulla Al Mutawa expressed gratitude to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dr. Yousef Abdulkarim Bucheeri, and Bahrain's Permanent Representative to the Arab League for their support in securing this important position for the Kingdom. He also thanked the Arab states for their confidence in electing him to the committee and emphasized his commitment to collaborating with fellow members. Mutawa is dedicated to achieving the committee's objectives, monitoring states parties' compliance with the Charter, and advancing the human rights framework in the Arab region.
The Arab Charter on Human Rights Committee is the first treaty body in the Arab region tasked with monitoring human rights and fundamental freedoms in member states. It also oversees the review and discussion of national reports submitted under the Charter's provisions.
