Bahrain Reiterates GCC Condemnation of Iranian Aggression During UN Security Council Briefing on Energy, Minerals and Security

New york: The Kingdom of Bahrain reaffirmed the Gulf Cooperation Council’s condemnation of the Iranian aggression against GCC states during a United Nations Security Council briefing on “Energy, Minerals and Security”.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the Kingdom underscored the statement issued by the Ministerial Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council, which condemned in the strongest terms the unjustified Iranian attacks targeting GCC states and several other Arab countries. The statement called for the immediate cessation of these attacks to restore security, peace, and stability in the region, and stressed the importance of safeguarding air and maritime security, ensuring the safety of regional waterways, and maintaining the stability of global energy supply chains and markets.

This came in a statement delivered by Jamal Fares Al Ruwaie, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, during the Security Council briefing on “Energy, Minerals and Security”. The session was chaired by Chris Wright, United States Secretary of Energy, in light of the United States’ presidency of the Security Council this month. The Council also heard a briefing from Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs.

In his remarks, the Permanent Representative welcomed the focus on the growing interlinkages between energy, critical minerals, and global supply chains, and their direct impact on international peace and security. He noted that critical minerals represent a cornerstone of modern economic development and are essential to strengthening national capabilities across strategic sectors, underpinning contemporary economic and technological transformations. This includes their role in advancing energy security and supporting industries of strategic importance.

Al Ruwaie emphasised that global competition over these resources has become increasingly complex, with intertwined geopolitical and economic dimensions. This reality, he noted, underscores the responsibility of the international community to ensure that critical minerals contribute to stability and sustainable development rather than becoming a source of tension or conflict.

He highlighted the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to promoting responsible and sustainable management of natural resources, as well as transparency and international cooperation in regulating global supply chains. Such efforts are aimed at mitigating the risks of monopolisation, politicisation, and market disruptions, and ensuring a secure, sustainable, and affordable global market. In this context, he pointed to Bahrain’s participation in several international and regional initiatives and agreements related to energy cooperation, as well as a number of bilateral partnerships in energy exploration and production, including the recently signed Framework for Cooperation on Critical Minerals with the United States.

The Permanent Representative also commended the important role played by the International Seabed Authority, established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, in regulating the exploration and exploitation of deep-sea mineral resources in areas beyond national jurisdiction, describing it as a balanced and necessary legal framework.

Addressing regional developments, Al Ruwaie reiterated Bahrain’s condemnation of the ongoing Iranian aggression targeting the Kingdom without justification. He noted that Iran continues to pursue actions that undermine regional and international stability, including threats to freedom of navigation, attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz, and attacks targeting oil tankers and energy infrastructure across the region.

The Permanent Representative concluded by calling on the international community to strongly condemn these attacks given their serious implications for regional and international peace and security. He also emphasised the importance of strengthening international cooperation to safeguard vital waterways and strategic infrastructure and to ensure that critical resources are not exploited in ways that fuel conflict. He reaffirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s firm support for the principles of international law and respect for the sovereignty of states as essential pillars for preventing escalation and maintaining regional and global peace.
